What did you learn at GEAR UP West?

  1. I learned how to make a communications plan, and a few different tips for displaying data that may help the GEAR UP office with making our data reports more useful.

  2. I learned that you should not let your undocumented students submit a FAFSA application even if they are in the federal deferred action program. The social security number they receive under deferred action is only for work purposes and does not make them eligible for federal financial aid. In fact, submitting a FAFSA without a proper social security number might hurt their chances for renewal for the deferred action program.

    If a post-secondary institution asks them to fill out the FAFSA to determine their financial need, they should only fill out the paper form at that time.
