OSU Natural Resources Leadership Camp
Federal Schools:
June 25th-29th for students currently in 10th
grade
Ford Family
Schools: June 27th-29th for students currently in 7th
grade
This summer, there is a fantastic opportunity for GEAR UP
students currently in 7th & 10th grade and their
teachers to have a unique experience learning about college and careers on
Oregon State University’s campus. The Office of Precollege Programs and Oregon
GEAR UP are providing funds for a week-long residential summer program for up
to 4 students and 1 teacher from each partner GEAR UP school. The teacher
will receive a $400 stipend for attending the camp as well as
professional development opportunities. All expenses are paid, although
participants will need to cover transportation costs to/from Corvallis.
Ideally, the teacher attending the camp can drive them as a group. This year,
there will also be a refundable deposit of $25 required of participants to hold
their space in the camp.
Participants will learn about careers in the Natural Resource
field through tours, panel discussions and hands-on activities with experts at
OSU. Field trips with the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will introduce
participants to a variety of natural resources and systems; focusing on the value, protection, and conservation of Oregon’s
wildlife, forestry, soil, and water resources. There will be many opportunities
to get outside and learn to be a leader and steward of the environment.
In addition, undergraduate college mentors will engage with the GEAR UP
students in small cohorts about college life and preparation, including
building teamwork, communication and leadership on OSU’s low ropes and
Challenge Course, and daily evening activities. Students will create a
final capstone project that will be presented to the group that incorporates
their learning and reflection from the week in addition to future goals and
plans.
Students and teachers will live in university dorms, eat
meals on campus, and be fully integrated into a college life setting. We
hope you’ll join us for this exciting experience on OSU’s campus, committed to
creating leaders among the GEAR UP cohort who can inspire their classmates and
community towards higher education.
