Question of the Week: Promoting a College-Going Culture

If I walked into your school’s front hallway, what are three things I would see that tell me you are promoting a college-going culture?

The Question of the Week is an opportunity for coordinators to share their insights, successes, and challenges.  Post a comment to share your ideas!  Have a question you want to ask others?  Submit it to dana_beck@ous.edu.

  1. Check out this resource from UCLA. Professor Patricia McDonough of UCLA has identified nine critical interrelated elements that together help schools build and strengthen a college-going culture. These nine elements are:
    •College Talk
    •Clear Expectations
    •Information and Resources
    •Comprehensive Counseling Model
    •Testing and Curriculum
    •Faculty Involvement
    •Family Involvement
    •College Partnerships
    •Articulation

A slide presentation that can be used with school faculty can be downloaded from: http://collegetools.berkeley.edu/resources.php?cat_id=9
