Growth Mindset and Social Emotional Learning Summer Institute

Who should attend?
Individuals or teams from GEAR UP schools who are interested in learning how to integrate growth mindset and social emotional learning into educational programs to positively impact student success and wellness should attend. GEAR UP encourages schools to send teams of at least two participants, but individuals may register. Clusters may register up to three participants, and have a wait list of up to two.

Agenda
Tuesday, August 11: 10:00 – 5:30 with a break for lunch
Wednesday, August 12: 9:00 – 5:30 with a break for lunch
Thursday, August 13: 9:00 – 1:00 lunch to follow

Lodging

• Workshop participants who are also chaperones at the GEAR UP Student Leadership Event will stay with their students in dorms on the Oregon State University campus. Chaperones will have single rooms. Linens will be provided.  
• Participants who are not chaperoning students are responsible for their own lodging. GEAR UP is working on reserving a small block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn Corvallis which is located on campus, close to CH2M Hill Alumni Center. More details to come.

What will GEAR UP provide?

• Meals in the campus dining hall (lunch on day one through lunch on day three)
• $600 Stipend
• Lodging in the dorms for participants also serving as chaperones

Student Leadership Opportunity - Bring Justin and Greg to Your School!

Justin Boudreau and Greg Evans have traveled the world conducting student workshops, including our very own GEAR UP Student Leadership Event. Justin and Greg are available the week of October 28 – November 1, 2013 to conduct one-day Student Leadership Events at 5 Oregon GEAR UP schools. In addition to the student leadership component, Greg Evans could conduct a 1 -2 hour workshop for educators. 

Cottage Grove Open House

Coming on the heels of a successful open house at La Pine, the administrators and staff at Cottage Grove High School have offered to open their doors and share promising practices on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Visitors will hear from school administrators and teachers about topics such as writing across the curriculum, project-based learning, credit by proficiency, CTE, College Now/AP, credit recovery, administrative observations, and more. There will an opportunity to visit classrooms to see these promising practices at work. See the draft agenda!

GEAR UP schools are invited to bring a team of 2-4, to include an administrator, lead teacher, and others who may benefit from this visit.

If there is interest, a visit to Kennedy Alternative High School can be arranged for the afternoon. Please indicate interest when you register.

Poll: College Greenlight Webinar

 College Greenlight is a free, online platform that allows high school counselors and community-based organizations to provide support to their students throughout the college search and application process. With features such as "best fit" college lists, customized college profiles, and a rich scholarship database, students will receive assistance each step of the way to help create the smoothest possible transition from high school to college. Ideal to use starting junior year and to help organize the college application process during the senior year!

The staff at College Greenlight have offered to help GEAR UP coordinators and counselors get acquainted with the site and its capabilities through a special online webinar.

La Pine Professional Development School Visit

The administrators and staff at La Pine Middle and High Schools have offered to open their doors on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 and share promising practices around their student and teacher engagement efforts. As a result of these efforts their schools have improved test scores, student participation and success, as well as created an overall positive school climate. 

GEAR UP schools are invited to bring a team of 2-4, to include an administrator, lead teacher, and others who may benefit from this visit. Visitors will hear from school administrators, teachers, and students about topics such as teacher and student engagement, a certified evaluation system, math and reading labs, writing across the curriculum, and tutorial schedules. EPI Book Recommendations: The Energy Bus

A new monthly column from our friends Jerry, Ron and Howard at Education Partnerships, Inc. (EPI) who work with GEAR UP principals. They will offer a short review of a book that will inspire, motivate, and/or challenge educators. This month: The Energy Bus, by Jon Gordon.

Billed as the “10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy” this book is built around a story of a disgruntled individual, George, who due to a disabled car is forced to ride the bus for a few days. During these commutes he meets Joy, the bus driver, who with the help of the bus passengers shares the life changing insights known as the “10 Rules” along with explanations of each one. Of course, these rules provide George with insights into his own life and the relationships he has with his spouse, friends and working colleagues which all improve. This is a fun read with neat suggestions for “enjoying the ride”.
