FORD schools: I'm Going to College Curriculum

NELA is offering the I’m Going to College program to Oregon GEAR UP schools again this year, although we anticipate that this will be the last year of the program.  I’m Going to College is a NELA Centers for Student Success program designed for elementary and middle school students, intended to create awareness of higher education and instill in students the idea that going to college is an attainable goal. The program includes a college-going curriculum, a backpack, and a visit to a nearby college campus. The curriculum (student books and teacher guides), backpacks, transportation and lunch (up to $7/person) are provided by NELA. There are a total of 178 student spaces available for 7th graders at Ford GEAR UP schools; 98 of those spaces were claimed after the announcement at Friday’s statewide meeting.

Program participants should be prepared to undertake these activities:
  • Deliver the curriculum to students.
  • Document the numbers of students served.
  • Gather and/or complete student, teacher, site coordinator evaluations and submit to NELA.
  • Provide final reports to the I’m Going to College program manager that details program outcomes and final budget expenditures.
  • Document and collect in-kind information for goods and services (including volunteers).
  • Submit any communication materials that use the I’m Going to College brand to NELA (for review prior to dissemination).
  • Submit receipts to NELA for transportation and lunch for reimbursement.
If you would like to offer this program to your seventh graders, email Anne with following information by  this Friday, February 3, 2012 (anne_stephens@ous.edu). Schools will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • The number of seventh graders participating
  • The number of teachers participating (for teacher guides)
  • The college you would like to visit
  • Anticipated transportation costs
